Orbost to Mallacoota in East Gippsland

After leaving Bruthen in Vic hubby & I drove onto Orborst and stopped in at the iconic Visitor Information Centre.

“The Orbost Visitor Information Centre Slab Hut was a family home built around 1872, with the family living on the farming property way up the Snowy River."

Supporting our Country's Towns

We stopped off at the Orbost Bakery, just one of the many cafes available to visitors and locals alike and enjoyed a hot drink sitting out on the street front.

I then did a bit of retail therapy and did my bit for the local economy. I found some wonder clothes at Andrews Land & Surf and just love the variety that they have in some of these little country towns.

Then we went for a wander around and stopped at a few other wonderful businesses in Orbost.

Walking with nature

From here we travelled onto the East Coast and one of our favourite walks – the Snowy River Estuary Walk a bit of an idea of the area. This well-maintained walking track starts at the coastal township of Marlo and follows along the estuary in a Northerly direction, through bush and sand for 5.1km. The walk provides breathtaking elevated views of the estuary, river mouth and the sweep of coastline to Point Ricardo in the east.

2020 Fire Damage

Continuing along the coastal road we ended up at Cape Conran Coastal Park, which is tucked away along Victoria’s far-east Wilderness Coast. This area was recently devastated in the Jan bushfires but is now showing many signs of Epicormic regrowth. There is still a lot of work to be done on the walking tracks to ensure the safety of tourists and walkers visiting the areas, but we still managed to enjoy our look around the place.

Continuing up the coast we passed through more fire-damaged areas along Cann River and Genoa before arriving in Mallacoota later in the afternoon and setting up the van for a few more days of R & R. In a couple of days, I will continue with my next update, about some of our walks around Mallacoota and our visits to the local retailers in town.

Till next time - STAY SAFE everyone.

About Us

R & J.png

Julie arrived in Australia from New Zealand on a working holiday when she was just 20 years old. After 6 months in Australia, she met up with Ron for a bushwalking trip in the Blue Mts NSW. They discovered that they had a shared passion for walking, and really enjoyed each others company. Julie never made it back to NZ and the rest, as they say, is history.  After over 40 yrs working and raising a family in Western Sydney they eventually sold up and retired to the stunning Sapphire Coast, NSW where together they continue their love of  walking.
