Arriving at Mallacoota – East Gippsland

After visiting a few other towns on the way from Orbost to Mallacoota, we arrived at Mallacoota later in the day and set up our caravan at the Mallacoota Foreshore Holiday Park.

We then wandered down to the lake edge for some of our favourite late afternoon photos.

26th June 2020
“The next day we set off around the lake edge for an 8km walk saw first hand some of the devastation that was caused by the Jan 2020 bush fires. We also noticed a lot of very lucky homes that had been saved. "

Mallacoota Bakery

If you like your pies and cakes then be sure to stop off at the Mallacoota Bakery for a taste of their homemade bakery.

We called in after our walk and enjoyed a pepper pie coming back the next day for their vanilla slice. Awesome!

Lucy’s

For us, a visit to Mallacoota is never complete without a meal at Lucy’s on the main street. A great selection of Asian food freshly made on the premises. We enjoyed the dumplings, sizzle fillet steak, sweet & sour pork and some awesome fried rice. We even had enough for leftovers the next day adding a couple of their pork dumplings to the mix. Not much cooking in the van this time around!

Local Businesses

It was nice to wander through town and say hello to a few of the business owners. They, like many businesses, are doing it tough this year.

So be sure to buy up and support these local businesses when you visit the area.

Images showing: Lucy's, Sues Bribes, Café @ 54, St Peters OP SHOP, and Mallacoota Butchery.

Bastion Beach Walk

Unfortunately, the walking tracks are still closed, but there has been a lot of reconstruction work on the beach accesses and we were able to visit Bastion Beach and enjoy the rock formations and the waves.

Normally we would walk down to Betka River via the beach and then back through the bushland tracks to Mallacoota.

Hopefully next time, we can do that again. Usually around a 10km walk.

Sunrise Splendor!

Yet another great sunrise from just down the side of the lake, looking out towards the ocean.

Of course, these photos have had a bit of artistic editing done to them, but it was still a stunning sunrise and a very COLD morning.

The lake out to the ocean is currently not open, so this allows for some great water reflections.

While this was only a quick visit to Mallacoota, we still enjoyed our stay and although we only live on the other side of the Vic border in NSW, we still love to visit this wonderful area.

We look forward to returning hopefully next year and in the meantime STAY SAFE everyone.

About Us

R & J.png

Julie arrived in Australia from New Zealand on a working holiday when she was just 20 years old. After 6 months in Australia, she met up with Ron for a bushwalking trip in the Blue Mts NSW. They discovered that they had a shared passion for walking, and really enjoyed each others company. Julie never made it back to NZ and the rest, as they say, is history.  After over 40 yrs working and raising a family in Western Sydney they eventually sold up and retired to the stunning Sapphire Coast, NSW where together they continue their love of  walking.
