A visit to Bruthen in East Gippsland

We love to stop over at little country towns in Victoria and SA and today we chose to take a break in Bruthen, East Gippsland and found yet another lovely little town.

2020 Bushfires
“With the Jan 2020 bushfires followed by Covid19, you would be aware that many of these small towns have been doing it exceptionally tough. In fact we were the 1st official paid visitors to be able to stay at the Bruthen Caravan Park this year!"

We had a great walk into town on the part of the East Gippsland Rail Trail that runs from Bairnsdale to Orbost almost 100 km in total.

We called the local Bruthen General Store for a quick chat with the store owner who is also involved with the town committee that manages the Bruthen Caravan Park. The park is currently accommodating the Blaze Aide Volunteers who have been working in the local area.

We then stopped off at the quaint local cafe called Blue Bee Cafe where we were able to sit outside for a cake and hot drink before checking out the wonderful Visitor Information Centre – from the outside, as several venues remain closed, unfortunately.

Stop and visit next time you are out on your travels

This town, like many small country towns, survives on passing trade and with the absence of holidaymakers and the Grey Nomads, many of the businesses are certainly struggling. Now with a new outbreak of COVID-19 happening in Melb. they may also not receive the anticipated July school holiday traffic!

So next time you are passing through Victoria, be sure to stop off at Bruthen and take a look around the town. It has a great history and friendly business owners who are always happy to have a chat.

Till next time - STAY SAFE everyone.

About Us

Julie arrived in Australia from New Zealand on a working holiday when she was just 20 years old. After 6 months in Australia, she met up with Ron for a bushwalking trip in the Blue Mts NSW. They discovered that they had a shared passion for walking, and really enjoyed each others company. Julie never made it back to NZ and the rest, as they say, is history.  After over 40 yrs working and raising a family in Western Sydney they eventually sold up and retired to the stunning Sapphire Coast, NSW where together they continue their love of  walking.
